how to perform a search within a report?

im creating an inventory so that anyone who comes can find a list of what's in the store. Im trying to do the following but still end up lost.

eg1. from the switchboard, under product catagories . there are a hundred cats so he chooses from a dropdown list. then from there it's queried and becomes a report.

eg2. also from the switchboard, by entering a serial number, a report pops up with all info about that item.

I read about filter by form, is that what's supposed to be used for the abovementioned?
