I am required to made up a database which needs to include details of a family - within this database I need to include details of all children, their sex and their date of birth.
Could someone give me some help on this please

Access has a wizzard which may help. When you start Access choose "Access database wizzards" and then select "Contact Management" and then follow the steps. Be prepared to play with the result (ie add/delete fields etc.).

Also consider buying a book on Access and/or find an online Tutorial somewhere.

I would use three tables at least:

tblFamily
FamilyID (Primary Key Autonumber)
Surname
Other info about family

tblParents
ParentID (PK Autonumber)
FamilyID (Foreign Key)
Firstname
Surname
ParentalType (Father, Mother, etc.)
other info about parent

tblChildren
ChildID (PK Autonumber)
FamilyID (FK)
Firstname
Surname
DOB
Gender
other info about child

Note: I put Surname in all three tables because, in this day and age, its possible for a family name and a child's name to not match. For example a mother remarrying, but the child retaining father's name or hyphenated names, etc.

I used parental type to cover Step parents etc.

If you need more let us know.

Good point Pat. I must have been still asleep this morning.

given up on the database

many thanks for your advise - Im not a access person and I work at a volunteer place where we help families who suffer domestic voilence - I was hoping to set this database up but I feel that I will give it away as some of the things you are talking about are way past my head - back to the pen and paper!! But thanks anyway for all your help.

The advice you have been given really relates to a fmily tree typeof database.

It does sound like you really want to do some contact management, in which case the Access Wizard that richary suggested may well build you something useable.

Be wary about security in the environment you describe. Some of the data may be very confidential.

Thanks Neil for the advise I will try the wizzard before giving up. We do have a code system setup so no names would be used. Thanks again
