I have an hp nc8230 laptop. Ive never had any power issues with it before. Well today i decided i was going to reload it. When i get to the xp setup screen the laptop just shuts off. Ive tried about everything. took battery out, different power cord. docking station with different power cord. And nothing seems to work. I have it shut off now, and going to see if the battery will fully charge before i try again. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.

You say it just completely shuts off? There's no power on the machine at all or does the screen just go black with the laptop still running? Have you tried turning it on and leaving it on without running set up? Does it still shut off on it's own? Is it consistently at the same place every time?
Well it hasnt been the same exact place everytime. but it seems like it basaically looses power. I was half way through a reinstall of windows when it happend so i have no OS on it now. After leaving it for 1.5 hours it seems to be working a little better. Ill know in a few minutes when it should be done.

You might have a faulty/ failing CPU fan and it's overheating and shutting down. You should be able to tell by listening if the fan starts up.
It's a simple fix if your ok with taking electronics apart (and putting them back together
) or a repair shop can do it for you. (Go for a smaller local place they are less likely to rip you off).

I once had a similar problem when installing another OS onto a PC except it was caused by the install media being corrupt...had to get a new disk.
