TRY

=IF(OR(A6="A/L",A6="RDO"),TIMEVALUE("00:00"),TIMEVALUE("17:45"))

Brian,
thankyou.. do I need to format the cell where the formula is??
If a6 is a/l or rdo I'm getting 0
if a6 is blank i'm getting 0.7396

I found this on the internet but it gives the error #NAME?.
I know its not what's in my question but I thought I could at least make it work but no matter what I put in C I get the error

=IF(OR(C1>100,C2>100,C3>100),”Over Budget”,”Acceptable”)

I'm using excel 2007 but will also be using excel 2010 for the final workbook.

thank you

Brian, format the cell as time hh:mm.

think this is it, thank you very much. i'll go and test it to see what I can do

Yes you need to format the cell to convert the time to your viewing format.

I do not know why you are getting a name error, having selected the cell with the formula in click on the fx by the formula and see if that helps, or follow the calculation steps from the little dropdown next to the cell when it displays #NAME
