I'm trying to import an Excel 97 spread sheet into Access 97 but for some reason as I import the spread sheet using the Import spread sheet Wizard it will not let me assign the data type. It's grayed out. I made all the cells in my spread sheet text file types. But the wizard wants to make this field one field a double field type and it won't let me change it to a text field. The data has a lot of numbers in it but some are letters and numbers like R10944. These are the fields where I get the error. Any thoughts?

Access is going to look at the first row after the field names to determine what the data type is set to. It doesn't care what the format in XL is. What I do in these situations, is to create a 'dummy' record that contains the data types that I want in Access. So the first row after the headers I put in 999.9 for number fields and AAA for text fields. After it is imported, I delete the 'dummy' record.
