or :
The Monkees

None of them could play/sing a single note !
Ahem
The Monkees were all accomplished artists.
Davey Jones appeared in the role of the Artful Dodger in the stage version of Oliver in both London and New York. He actually appeared in a scene from that show with the rest of the cast) on Ed Sullivan the same night the Beatles made thier N. American debut.
Mickey Dolenz had a TV series before the Monkees called Circus Boy. He took a hiatus from show biz to get his college degree and then became a Monkee.
Davey and Mickey essentially were actors who sang on the side.
Mike Naismith (who's mother invented Liquid Paper) composed numerous country songs before he became a Monkee and was a well respected session guitarist.
Peter Torkelson was a member of several rock bands before he was a Monkee.
Mike and Peter were essentially musicians who acted on the side.
The rumours about their not playing or singing their own songs came about because they only
sang on the tracks of their first few albums. Considering they were in the midst of shooting a TV series, its not suprizing they didn't have time to record the background music themselves.
The Monkees did two North American tours. The first between season 1 and 2 of the TV series and the second between season 2 and 3. With the exception of other musicians who were on stage and visible, they sang and played everything live.
