Just wonder whether it is possible to configure client application to link to tables in 'be' by pointing to the server's IP address instead of filesharing?

hooi,

This would be nice, at times, but it is my understanding that
table links must be in "UNC" format. No IPs or "NATed" addresses.

ic. Thanks Wayne.

Hi,

The be must be shared anyway (or the folder it resides in) or the client couldnt see it, what is it you are trying to do? a frind of mine at work was doing something to do with having a "dynamic" be to a dbase, and I seem to recall he was doing this via ip rather than unc name, what is it you are wanting to do exactly? I can ask him, his be was access tho the fe was via web pages.

Hi CALV,

I've split my database into 'be' and 'fe'. With the 'be' now residing in a server and the 'fe' being installed at a number of users' PCs in the company's workgroup environment. The reason I asked that question is because the IT support guy here is not so keen in providing filesharing access, he prefers access to the 'be' be via IP access.

I believe your colleague could be using Data Access Pages which allows data to be viewed/edited via web pages. IIS server is required for that to work.

I'm not sure whether we can create forms similar in complexity with Data Access Pages as that which can be created with MS Access Forms.

Thanks...

Hooi,

Assuming the BE is on a W2K or NT server, a shared folder is necessary to make Access run in split DB mode over a network, regardless of whether you refer to the BE computer by IP address or name. Search msdn.com or support.microsoft.com for network requirements when running Access as a split DB and, when you find relevant info, show these requirements to your network admin.

Regards,
Tim
