Locking a database to read only

The database I have created is stored on a shared drive on our network and everyone has "write access" to it. However, as you can imagine this opens nightmare scenarios when more than person is changing records etc. I would like to create only one "live" copy and anyone trying to access the database whilst someone is "writing" to it will only get a read only copy.
Please explain how I can do this (in simple terms as I am a novice to all of this!)
