What exactly is a macro and how would i use one to auto upadate a field every hour?

You could try looking up Macro in the Help file. There should be an OVERVIEW subheading which explains a great deal.

By way of amplification, the "once per hour" thing depends on either

(a) Leaving access running at all times, 24x7x52, with a minimized and invisible form always open to run your timing via an "OnTimer" event that does what you want, or

(b) Using an external Windows scheduler facility to do a command-line activation of your macro (that in this case would have to end with the QUIT action.) Look up the Help topic of "command line" to find out more about this specific feature.

ok, so basicaly i am going to have to have something running all the time on my server?

Technically, yes. Either Access itself or the Windows scheduler. (Or some third-party program if you found something on the web that would do it, too.) But something has to be there every hour.
