Hello all,

We are slowly making the conversion from A97 to A2000 and I've been reseaching how best to handle the transition. Currently we have a front-end/back-end setup, both A97, both on the network. The FE is an .mdb.

From the archives it seems the accepted strategy is to leave the BE in A97 and have two copies of the FE, one 97 and one 2000. Are there other options to consider as well? And do I need different .mdw files for each FE version?

If I do go with the 2 FE solution and I need to make edits to the FE design, can I simply make the edits in 2000, save it, and then save a copy in 97 format, or do I need to edit the two FE's separately? I hope my question is clear.

Any suggestions on this are greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
John

You can't attach an A97 FE to a A2k BE, so the BE has to be A97.

I have a few dbs that have this split setup, and when I make mods, I use the A2k FE and save this as an A97. I'm sure there may be some theoretical problems you could encounter, but it works fine for me.

The alternative is to stick with A97. An A97 FE can be opened by an A2k user, but they can't modify the FE, but if you don't want this ability, this might work for you.

I don't use Access security on any of my systems so I can't help with the .mdw

Thanks Neil,

I'd personally prefer to just leave the FE in A97, but when it's opened in A2000 it doesn't allow some stuff to run (ie enabling/disabling controls via code). I guess that qualifies as "modifying the design".

Again, thanks,
John
