Mapping to same computer on large network = Big Delay

Earlier in the day I posted a thread about local vs. network drive mapping. I believe this is a different question so I wanted to separate the two. Please don't think I am posting multiple threads to get more answers.

I do work for a large company that has a computer running Windows 2000 (on a huge corporate network) which we use as the server to house the backend of the database.

They users have their Z: drive mapped to the server. The FE resides on the user's computers and has linked tables through the z drive.

Since I don't have my own workstation there, I test the application on the server itself. So to make it work, we have to map the z: drive on the server to itself \\Server\dbbe.

When I test the application on the server, it takes 35 seconds for a certain form to open. If I change the link tables to C:\dbbe rather than use the z: mapped drive (which goes to the same place), the form opens in 1 second.

FYI - When I do the same thing on my home network of 3 computers, there is no such delay.

My question is, what happens on the network when you map a drive back to the same computer? Why would it make the queries/forms take so much longer to open? Does it go out to a router and back, etc???? or is there something else I am missing?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Randy
