Hi all
Can anybody tell me what is the mathematical formula for figuring what the sides of a log would be if it were squared off. In other words if I had a log that we say was 3 feet in diameter what would be the dimension of the sides if it would be timed until it was square.

Simon,
Many thanks
DicK S.

Drawing a square within the cicle, with two diagonals makes it obvious that

r * 2r / 2 is the area of one half of the square. Or 2r(r) is the area of the square.

So Root 2 * r is the lenght of one side.

Which is Root 2 * d/2 = d/root 2

I think.
