If I start access and try to create a new database or view any database after a second or so this dialog box saying access needs to close appears. It has only happened after I closed the program and it asked if i wanted to save the current dbase. If I view the offending database (by copying it via a pen drive) on my other computer every thing works perfectly!
I have tried the "repair program", same result. I have reinstalled the program, same result. I have totally uninstalled Office XP professional and reinstalled it SAME RESULT! As I am not a programmer I am at a loss!

RE MS Access needs to close!

Have you tried compacting an repairing the database

(Tools, database utilities , compact and repair

Even when I try to compact and repair access give this "needs to close dialog box" anyone have any other ideas Please? :)

This could be a complete waste of time and nothing to do with it but it could be spyware or adware on your computer.

Run whatever antivirus you use first. Do a complete scan. Have you visited Windows update lately and updated your Windows install? If not, do that next. If you are using XP then you could try system restore back to a date just before this started to happen. I think it is to do with your OS rather than office. As mentioned above, do all of the anti spyware stuff you have available as well.

This is really going to be grasping at straws here, but... here is another option...

Maybe it is because Access was shutdown abruptly or incorrectly (power failure etc.) and re-installing Access will not correct it.

Try:

1) Open Access, wait until it is fully loaded (couple of minutes to be sure), close it. Reboot.

2) Open Access, wait and then open a database, wait until it is fully loaded, and then close it (just the database - mdb file - leave Access open). After a couple of minutes close Access. Reboot.

3) Open Access, wait and then create a new database, wait until it is fully loaded, and then close it (just the database - mdb file - leave Access open). After a couple of minutes close Access. Reboot.

Hope this helps. :)

Edit-

Try it after each option.
If It doesn't correct it after option #2, I doubt option #3 will work, but I threw it in there anyway...
Just throwing another idea in the works :)

I thank all of you for trying to help, I have checked with antispyware programs and no spyware. also checked with adaware (latest version) checked with 3 antivirus programs (I am paranoid about viruses!) Tried opening access OK rebooted OK opened access OK as soon as I tried to open a database the dialog box saying access needs to close and do you want to compact and repair the database popped up I ticked the box to compact and repair but whe I tried to open the backup database the same dialog box popped up before I could even open the error. Any other thoughts would be appreciated even to a complete uninstallation of Office Professional, and a regedit to clean out any remaining references and then a reinstall of Office. All the other modules of Office work with no problems.
Regards Bob.

Bob:

If you go to "Help", and then select "Detect and Repair", it might help you. It asks for the original disk, and it does its stuff. I had a serious problem with Access once, and I did this, and it helped.

Are you still unable to open ANY db's or create new ones after your last attempts or is it just the one db that gives you trouble now?

I didn't see where you did Windows updates... try that, sometimes it helps.

Shadow had a good idea.... try that too

You said that you already did a reinstall of office so that should not be required again till you sort out what is wrong. Should not is the key here... it is possible that your registry is messed. If you are comfortable with regedit you could try that as well. Uninstall office and then remove all references to office in the registry.... then install again. Make a backup of your registry first and know how to recover it if needed or you may wind up not able to boot your machine. Then you would wind up having to reinstall your OS which could cause you to lose valuable information. Be safe rather than sorry. If you are unsure about these things, find someone that does know and get some assistance.

I would save this until you have exhausted all other attempts.....

 I have done all the things suggested so far but there is still no joy. What I need is a system of deleting ALL the left over things from the registry like the cleanup utility for Office 2000 which Microsoft say NOT to use on Office XP. Any ideas on this subject would be much appreciated as I am losing what little hair I have left (pulling frantically)

Open your task manager

It may not be an Access problem. Open the task manager and see if there is a process running that is the culprit. Do you have more than one virus protection application running in the background at the same time? They might be clobbering each other and the Access application, too.

What is your OS?

Edit:
If this were me having this trouble for nearly a week, I would probably not be able to stand it. By now I would have low level formatted my disk and reinstalled all the software. I used to do this on a regular basis but since XP I find that it is not necessary as often. Still, I will only deal with something like this for so long and then consider it a waste of time to keep trying.

It depends on your situation though. Windows updates can take an enormous amount of time if you have dial-up. You would need to copy off any data that you want to save or it would be lost. You also need to have all of the software to reinstall.

You probably can work this out if you keep at it long enough. To start with though, post your OS version. This could also be a memory problem. Does this happen with any other software? If you find the answer in the meantime, please post here what you found so we can all benefit from it. :D

Great thread!
Great input!
I too would have formatted by now. ;)

Reading all the posts I would have put my money on a corrupt registry or OS.
JrJr had a good question whether it was just a simple memory issue.
Another option to rule out other apps conflicting is to boot to "Safe Mode" hitting the "F5" (on my machine) before windows loads, and then run Access in safe mode and see if you can load your problemattic database and see if you can create a new database with no issues, that would tell you if you have conflicting interests on your machine.
Also post your file system info... Fat32 or NTFS. Stick with NTFS.
If it is Fat32 you may have to repair it.
Personally I thought using system restore to go back to an earlier date was an excellent idea, but since that didn't work, I through out the idea of a "bad registry" .
The following suggestions can get lengthy in time, and quite frankly I would format if repairing your OS didn't work, BUT I would like to see more suggestions here before you do that!
Try repairing your OS to see if that works.
If you have an older operating system then we can get into "DLL hell" and I think it would be faster to just to reformat your computer... than to go through your working DLL's to see what version you are using. Maybe someone else can give you a short cut on that one.

The only other problem I have had in the past with Access (2003) and running antivirus is with Kaspersky (Personal Pro). Those two just didn't gell. I reported the issue with Kaspersky, didn't really have the time to do beta testing with them and switched to Norton's.
To be fair, I haven't tried it since and that particular problem may be resolved by now. But if you do have Kasperskys Anitvirus try uninstalling it and or booting to Safe Mode to check if there is a conflict.

OK this is to answer some of your suggestions. Operating system windows xp pro. with ALL the updates! MS Office XP PRO with ALL the updates! Yes I am only using 1 anti virus program ( Kaspersky anti virus Pro) with ALL the updates (downloaded every 3 hours!) I have not had any problems with this program at all and have been using it for 5 years with several operating systems and different versions of windows and office on several different computers. System is pentium 4 2.4 ghz 1gb memory 2 160 gb SATA drives. There are too many things to reload if I have to format and reinstall!!
What I would like to do is completely uninstall office and find a utility the same as the one microsoft have for access and office 2000 which they say is NOT to be used with Office XP to clean out all the remaining items left behind with the uninstall. Being retired ( forcibly with cancer 6 years ago ) I find I have plenty of time and ALMOST infinate patience to sort these things out, but I cannot seem to do this one.
File system NTFS. the main problem seems to be that I cannot find the system.mdw file any where in ti's place all I find is a .ldb file!!

Need Help in VBA

My If Then Else statement will only execute the first record. Example if there are four records, the statement look at first record to execute.

Example:
If varX = "Hardware" then
Docmd.openForm1
else
if varX = "Software" then
Docmd.openForm2
else
Docmd.openForm3

My data are as follow:
Description - Type
ArcviewCD - Software
Printer - Harware
Montor Cable - Others

I want the record with Type Hardware but the If Then Else statement select the Type Software. I think I have to put the recordset.movefirst or recordset.movelast.But it also can't produce the result I want.Therfore can
anyone help me to solve the problem?

Thank you in advanced.

Ok, I was bold enough to mention Kaspersky and the problem I had in the past (actually going back, it was May of 2004 I had that issue), so I thought I should "cowboy up" and recheck my system. I deleted Norton's and reinstalled the latest version of Personal Pro and so far I have not had a problem.
Great another survivor! My wife has been ok now for 15 years and counting! :)
.LDB file... from the help file:
Code:
When you open an Access database file (.mdb) in shared mode, Microsoft Access also creates a locking information file (.ldb) with the same file name (for example, Northwind.ldb) and in the same folder as the database file. This locking information file stores the computer name (such as mypc) and security name (such as Admin) of each shared user of the database. Microsoft Access uses this information to control concurrency. In most cases, Microsoft Access automatically deletes the locking information file when the last user closes the database file.
I take it that Access on your machine still sees this database as currently being opened and has locked it, it hasn't been properly closed.

I found your previous or similar thread...
Here

Here is another similar subject...
Removing MDW protection?

There are many people here more adept in security in Access than I am. Do a search if you haven't already for "MDW".

As for the .ldb file, maybe just deleting it will help, unless others object to it. In the mean time I will look for such a utility you talked about.

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

I believe this is what you are looking for... read carefully!
At the bottom of the article it will say what it applies to.
