Hi Gents....

Yes , i'm an old guy that was giving a task to come up with a incident database that has links to external databases and can recall historical data from a forms or switchboard ( not sure ) which on is better...But have no access experience what so ever....this is going to be fun screwing up a lot ....and it look like you guys are the experts and from what i have read so far....from Canada Ontario.

the data that i'll be dealing with will be satellites ( G1,F1,F2 ) transponders etc..and what this database will be to record all faults and resolutions of past and present....ya real fun... and do not know how to start it off...we have access 2007

First thing would be to find/Decide a place for your database to live and a place for your database to be developed (PRODUCTION/DEVELOPMENT)

I like to develop on the user desktop in a dedicated folder because development is then faster and less volatile. Be sure you plan regular backups, especially before you make any major/significant changes to any objects or Data.

Create a blank database and save it in your designated development folder
Consider the data you want to keep in the database
Create Tables that will accomodate the data

If you have structured data from external sources in XLS or CSV formats with Column Headers then,
First try to just copy the Sheet of Data and paste it into the Database

You'll see how the database thinks it should be represented in a table.
Look at the table in Design Mode and you'll see what types of data you have and data field sizes etc.

It'll be like dippin yer toe in the water...

When you have specific questions... ask away, we've lots of people here to help you. Welcome to the Forum!

Cheers,
Goh

FYI: Whatever you ask for - ask for specifics. If you don't know what to ask for then you are unlikely to understand any answer and many readers won't bother expending effort trying to hit whatever is on your mind, so do your homework and break your issues down into manageable and "askable" stuff. If you pose open-ended questions on ill-defined topics hardly anybody will let themselves get sucked into that.

Start with a typical scenario telling us what this entails
...dealing with will be satellites ( G1,F1,F2 ) transponders etc..and what this database will be to record all faults and resolutions of past and present
We only know what you tell us and we really are NOT familiar with the "business jargon" that may be involved. From the 30000 foot overview you could tell us in simple terms:
WHAT a typical satellite fault and resolution involves. The simpler the picture, the better readers will understand.

Here's a few guesses at what some of the terms mean, but you could help by clarifying and adding details once we're on the same wavelength.

dealing with?? planning/design/launching/monitoring
faults?? missed deadlines/loss of contact/loss of orbit
resolutions??

Possible rules/facts?
A Satellite has 1 or many transponders
A Transponder may have 1 or many faults
A fault may have 0,1 or many resolutions.
Some faults are not related to Transponders?

created a form for my Incident database, but now on my form i need a enbedded macro to "save and new " for data to be save to .

what is the best way of doing this?

thank you in advance

i'm tring to send attachment of my project but unable to do so..

thanks

Make a zip file then you should be able to attach your file.

jdraw: he doesn't have enough posts!
Pantheon: just post 4 dummies so that you reach 10 posts... then you will be allowed attachments.

Unfortunately, this exception is not widely known and how to post is not consulted.
A possible solution would be to set up a package for new users ex: computer OS, Access version, zip of the db, etc. That would save lots of posts asking again and again the same requests...

JL,

I tend to agree with you. However, as you said you have many years experience, and I have seen you on forums. If you don't look at the stickys, what hope is there that newbies will --when most don't know Access from Excel or a table from a database or query.

Perhaps we should have a set up where you have to "check a box" saying you have read the stickys, before accepting a new post. But, then, some readers would probably just check the box (he said with a smile).

If as I said some specific 'rules' were imposed, then a non conforming post could be sent to the 'post bucket'...
