Hi everyone,
I am going nuts with problems I am experiancing getting remote frontend workstations to connect with a backend database on a server running win xp. The program runs fine on server, but when I try to link the remote frontend database to the backend server I get the error message saying the database has either been placed in exclusive use, or you don't have permission to view it. The funny part is that I get this message even if no one has the program open. Also I can browse through the network to the shared backend and when I try to open the file, I get the error message file does not exist, check the file directory name for accuracy ?

I have checked the options settings to ensure the backend is shared. I have also given all possible permissions on all objects for all users in the access security setup. Still no luck opening from a remote front end.

Any thoughts on areas I should check ? Also, I seem to only have the problem on winxp networks ??
Desparate for guidance

Sorry for the incorrect syntax. Let me rephrase. Peer-to-peer network all PC's on WINXP professional, the Backend database is stored on a "high performance" PC. I am just wondering if Windows XP user security can effect remote terminals trying to access a backend database. All users have been set up as administrators on XP and belong to the ADMIN group in access ?

Could anyone give me info on how the .ldb file works on a network ???

Thanks Chris

Each user must be able to create, edit and delete the .ldb [record locking] file. The .ldb file is automatically created when the first user has opened the db. The next users will edit the .ldb file and the last user to close the db [Access] will delete the .ldb file.

permissions in access or xp

Do you mean user permissions in access or windows xp ?
Thanks
Chris

He's talking about user permissions to the XP directory where the database is stored. In order to share an Access db, Jet must be able to create/update the .ldb file in the db's directory.

Thanks

Pat
