Hello All,

I have years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer in aircraft engine development. I am A frustrated Access developer due to my lack of ability to write event code :banghead:. Also I experience organizations using Excel when Access should be used to collect, develop and deliver information for complex management processes in a matrix type organization. I have been successful in developing Apps in Access to facilitate the management of departmental processes. See below:

  • I sold and developed application for managing and tracking certification process for new commercial aircraft engine. The application has been utilized to manage the process of certification on four major programs.
  • I also designed, developed and maintained information applications in MS Access to support Systems Engineering and Validation organization. Success involved release of applications to track and provide management feedback for a complex Operational Risk Management and a Gated Review process. Additionally designed and developed Access to assist in managing a Risk Mitigation and as well as other tracking applications.

I like the sound of that... Has the transition provided a productivity increase or decrease?

Welcome to AWF...

Productivity increased with out a doubt! When I saw 3 people ( 2 engineers and an assistant) chasing spreadsheets I said: "there is a better way to do that". And the reply was show me. That started my endeavor with Access. Subsequently the group leader and one part time assistant tracked all activity. The Access app has been used for all cert programs. When a Canadian TCCA person saw how Access performed in modeling the process and providing "Management" reports he exclaimed - "I want that!". The way engineering organizations use spreadsheets is "backwards". Simple Access input forms and then data turns into valuable information to track and measure progress. Most management questions like: what's late, where is the overall program status, who's(organization) not performing can be provided by click on action button to produce informative reports. Thanks for asking. Regards, Erv
