Dear Access Expert.

The Validation does what I want... only accept numerical digits but I don't understand how it works.

First off doesn't [0-9] only represent 1 digit?

Second if [0-9]represents more than 1 digit why does the following fail?

S987 or SS7654ABC.

I am very confused by this Validation rule.

[0-9] represents any number in the range from 0 to 9.

S987 fails because it contains a non numeric value. If you changed the validation to [0-5] any numeric value that contained a digit greater than 5 would fail.
