I am trying to set up PC Anywhere to access my mother-in-law's PC from our home (in another state) & vice versa. The pc Anywhere documentation says I need to map these port numbers to the private IP address of the host computer, which is assigned by the router: 5631 (port) and 5632 (status)

1. How do I accomplish this for our Road Runner account and her AOL account? Do I do this or does internet provider do it?

2. I think Is the IP address I identified in the Network Neighborhood
is periodically reassigned. Do I need to obtain a permanant one? If not, how will the other PC "find" it when the IP address keeps changing?

Thanks for your help.

PC anywhere  that's one expensive piece of software and it's really designed to run in a corporate enviroment so you may struggle.

First off I'd simply try it see if it works. Install it on both machines and try a connection via one of the machnines IP address', if that works then your off and running.

Your correct though the IP address of either machine can change as it assigned dynamically (though I'm not 100% sure if this is right with AOL), you could apply to the ISP for a fixed address but they might charge you extra. Instead why not simply get the IP address when required by going to Start > run and type cmd then enter. In the command window type ipconfig this will show your IP address when connected.

If it doesn't work then you will have to check the ISP setup they may be able to provide this service but then again it's not quite that simple (as each of their 'clients' will get a dynamically assigned IP address). They will be able to advise you best.

OTHER OPTIONS:

RDP (Remote desktop connection) - This is built into WinXP (Start > Accessories > Communications) and is a simple and effective way BUT a couple of thing to be aware of:

1) It will only available in WinXP PRO - it is there in Home but you don't have the options to set the connection properties to only accept a connection from a remote user - see this link and here

2) it not renowned to be totaly secure

3) You have to log in as the remote user (or a valid user on the remote machine) and it locks the far end PC when in use.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Very secure way of connecting to other machines but may be a bit complex to setup - I haven't tried and honestly don't know all the requirements and details but it is very secure and cheap - well free actually here is some open source VPN software (highly recommended)

I'm getting a bit carried away so I'll stop for now :D - try it first see if it works you never know :p

Actually, we already have the pcAnywhere program. My husband found an inexpensive 11.0 version on E-bay last year, but we are only just now looking to DO something with it. Since we already have it, would you recommend using the PCAnywhere, or the parts that are built into XP? Would the PCAnywhere be more secure?

If we did use the PC Anywhere, what about mapping these ports?
The pc Anywhere documentation says I need to map these port numbers to the private IP address of the host computer, which is assigned by the router: 5631 (port) and 5632 (status)
Is that something we do on OUR machine, or request Roadrunner do to our account?

I will look at your links, especially the VPN one, when I get home tonight. Fortunately, my husband is going to his mother's house this weekend, so we plan to work on the project at both ends. We are trying to find a way to help my mother-in-law from afar when she has trouble with her PC.

Don't get me wrong, I've used PC anywhere (on a corporate network) and it works very well, if you've got it then why not use it - obviously ensure the security settings are setup correctly so that only you can connect and visa-versa though this in itself may cause problems as you have to specify the domain name of the user connecting.

The good news - ignore everything I've said before :p (apart from this post) and check out this link it details how to set up pcAnywhere over the internet - take note of the AOL parts ! and the Host DNS Server IP Address part you may still have to get assistance from your provider.

Have a read this should provide you with all the info required - sorry to lead you a little astray I should have performed a proper search before posting. :D

Best option is to contact Symantec Technical Support on +1 800 342 0652*or*520 477 3022 regarding setting up PC anywhere on your mother’s computer. In addition to it, you can use various other remote support services such as logmeinrescue, gosupportnow, GoToMyPC etc. in order to remotely access your Mother in law computer, until your PC Anywhere issue is resolved. You may even consider having on premise remote support appliance deployment from Bomgar or RHUB.
