Performance hit when renaming linked tables?

Hi All and Good Afternoon,

I have been asked a question to which I didn't know the answer so I thought I would post it here and see if anyone else could provide an answer. A collegue of mine just "picked up" an old Access db that was given to him and upsized it to SQL Server. Everything is fine except that after upsizing none of the objects in the db work because SQL Server adds the user name to the tables when they are brought in (dbo_TableName). I know you can rename the linked table name in the FE but is this a bad thing to do...? Could this potentially corrupt data, lead to crashing, or slow the performance?

Any/All input is appreciated!
Thanks -Kev

Kevin,

Renaming an attached table does not cause any problems.

What about stuff such as SPROCS and Views? I guess if these are on the server side you're ok. Id be very careful with your front end though..be careful not to mess with hard coded table names if you are going to be renaming stuff.

Hi Jon -

My colleague isn't planning on renaming hardcoded tables on the server side - just renaming the links in the Access FE to match with the previous names in the FE before the db was split. Basically:

Pervious Table Name:

Customer

Link Name after upsizing and relinking:

dbo_Customer

Renamed link in FE to: Customer FROM dbo_Customer

Changing this hasn't produced any kind of error or slowdown - I just wanted to check with this forum to make sure it would be alright since I haven't really done this before myself!

Thanks to everyone for the help -
Kev
