I have been asked to develop a small access db, but last time i ad something to do with access was 4 years ago. i've been asked to get it done by today.

if any of you gig’s out there could help me out of this nightmare i would be so grateful.

Every day, we will receive an ever growing spreadsheet.

I need to import this into an access database, use a lookup on the postcode to allocate zones for the work to be done, and for users of the database to be able to filter what they see so that they are only looking at the zones they are booking for.

The user will need to amend the status of each job from processed (meaning the kit has been sent) to: kit received, booking made, installation complete or "not required".

Each day the spreadsheet will grow, and it is important when the new, larger sheet is imported that it does not over-write the previous day's updates to status.
Basically

Table format is attached.

all in a day? haha if you have a boss then he's an idiot and if this is you thinking you can do this in a day then i'm sorry but you are mistaken. First of all I would create a Linked table to this spreadsheet and have that as a temp table to manipulate within access, no point importing it everyday.

Then the tricky part is allocating zones. You are going to have to create a table that Shows all post codes eligible for that zone. i.e you have say Zone A, Zone B, Zone C, Zone D in one table. Then in another table your gonna have all the say first 2 digits of each post code. (remembering you have given ID's to all of these & the zones)
Then in you table with the postcodes you'l have a 3rd column (The first being the ID, Second being the Post Code prefix) which will be the zone id. That will define zones.

Then I recommend you searching for Booking Db's looking at their structure and incorporating above into search/filter parameters.

I can say now that you will not get this done in a day if you had any chance of getting this done in a day you need probably 3 things:

1) Exstensive knowledge of your data & structure
you probably have this.

2) Exstensive knowledge of your db structure
you dont have this hence being here

3) Exstensive knowledge of Access & VBA
you dont have this.. im presuming!

Good luck... ;)

I am more of sql, mysql, php, and java developer. i used access back in the school days, hence my limited knowledge.

My boss regained his senses and outsourced this...damn am I happy :)

many thanks for your reply...felt a bit like an idiot saying yes to something i could not do :p

no problems.. i just hope the person he's outsourced it to has more than a day to get a feel for the data!
