Hi all

Does anyone know how to create a drop down menu in access so it related to another drop down menu, for example one drop down has a list of countries and the other has the states. so if anyone was to choose the country in first drop down, the second will only show the states relevant to that country (chosen in the first one). Please help!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Alex

Have you searched the forums? there are examples in the Sample database section

Cascading Comboboxes ;)

thank you so much, i didn't even know what to search for.

That's one of the most frustrating things about being a newbie, I do believe the help files in newer versions have made it even more difficult :(

Still need help

Hi all,

i found some example of combo boxes, which was simillar to what i wanted. the explanations are stright forward, and i still can make it work, it just doesn't and that's it. Not only did i have 1 day to learn access for the first time, i still can't do anything in it. i have attached a file with the database example, which i can make to work. if anyone, please, could have a look at it and maybe fix it or tell me how to fix it, i would most greatful.

I would suggest you try something like this where you don't have seperate state files for each country.

problem once again

and when i thoight everything was finally working properly. thanks Peter. another problem struck me. when i use the form with combos, the information is not saved to database and the small button at the bottom: arrow which switches to the next record, doesn't work. is there any way i can fix it, so the information is stored in the database. i aslo added few more fields to the form. please help.

Alex

Alex.. yes you haven't got anything in the forms RecordSource so it will not be updating anything.

Are you wanting to use the form to add new countries and states?

Peter

well you see Peter, the country example was just a general thing, i though i then would be able to adapt to my needs. i am actually building a hazard register, but i didn't want to ask anyone to do the thing for me, just because i am complitelly access iliterate. so what i actually need is combo with hazard type and then related combo with hazard name. how can i make the example you've made save the information to the database? any help would be great, thank you so much.

Alex,
You may want to do a search in this forum for the 'NotInList' event. This is commonly used if you are wanting to add an item that is not in the combo box. If this is not what you are after or have further questions - then let us know.

Peter, thank you for your ongoing support, the whole project has been a pain, i just wish it was over already!!!
i have attached the file of the actual database, i am very ashamed to ask that, but could you have a look and maybe tell me how to fix the combo box problem. basically the hazard type has to be chosen and then it will influence the hazard name. both are in the hazard_set table. please help. thank you so much once again.

Alex, loaded down your db but it contained no table for Hazard Name - only HazardType, Location, and Main tables. HazardName was a Text field in Main.

I assume that what you want to do is select HazardType, it will populate the HazardName combo with relevant items - you can select one of these or if you enter a new item, it will write that new HazardName out to the HazardName table - is that correct?

Peter

Peter,

i have uploaded an updated file, there is a table HAZARD_SET which should work similar to the table tblStates that you did for me before. hazard type and appropriate hazard name should be picked up from that. please let me know if you are able to help me. Thank you.

Thank you so much Peter, you've saved my life once again. You know when i enter the data it goes to the database and is stored there. do you know why when i enter a HazardName it is stored as a number. so when i try to run a report it gives me only numbers in the HazardName column. is there any way to fix this? i really need the hazard names to be visible on the reports and in the database. please let me know if it possible to fix this. thanks in advance, Alex

Alex, change the definition of the field HazardType in the Hazard_set table to a lookup field. Alternately change your queries to pick up the name by using a join.

It is the correct procedure to store it this way.

Peter

Thank you so much Peter, everything is finally working!!!
