Hello again. :)

My account is planning to upgrade the Access they use from 97 to 2000. But my boss wants to know what the impact would be to my database system that was created in 97.

I was wondering if there is a document or web sites that shows all the changes between 97 and 2000. Or if possible some kind of tool that shows what needs to be changed for 2000. I have heard that converting 97 database to 2000 is a pain in the pooper sometimes.

Thanks

First, if you have a copy of Office2k with Ac2k, there is a HELP topic (What's new in Ac2k).

Second, there is always an upgrade issue with any major-version upgrade.

There are ways to minimize upgrade impact. One of them is to split the database into Front-End/Back-End status, which would allow copies of Ac97 and Ac2k to share the same back-end, having converted or unconverted front-ends.

If your account DID convert completely, you have to watch out for the biggest speed bump I've seen so far - DAO vs. ADO libraries. Depending on just what code lies underneath the forms, reports, and modules, you might have some recoding to do to qualify a lot of DAO references. Also, in this same sub-topic, the DAO library changed and your .DLL references will have to be updated. (From a code module window, click path Tools>>References, which opens a complex dialog box/child window.)

To be gentle about it, the more code involved that did anything with recordsets and external "things" - the bigger the can of worms.

If a company is going through the trouble of converting, why convert to such an old version. AXP is a much better choice and more stable as far as I can tell. A2003 may be too annoying due to the new safety "features" requiring certificates.

Couldn't agree more here Hammerva... as Pat said A' XP is way, way better (read: less bugs. better features, more stable) then A' 2000. If the Company/Organization is moving the OS to 2000 pro and inform them that they can still move OS to 2000 pro and upgrade Office to XP without any problems...

Food for thought at least...

****oohh could not having qualified my DAO database, querydefs and recordsets account for the 100-200% speed reduction I've had since 'upgrading' to access 2002 from 97?

opinions please and very much appriciated!
