I have a computer here with a USB external hard drive. When users of this machine (including myself) use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray to stop another device such as a flash drive or camera for removal, there is always the potential of accidentally stopping the external hard drive.

Is there any way to lock the device from being stopped that way, or any other possible solution?

Thanks

I can't think of a way to do this, not even a hack, each storage (in most cases) devices will be added.

Just tell them to r.e.a.d. p.r.o.p.e.r.l.y :p

Actually why use this at all ? I have never done with any of my devices and I'll quote from another post I made

I can't remember the specific techincal reason behind this but I know it's to do with the way XP handles file transfers but in most cases you don't need to eject the device, however in Win2000 backwards you did (as it handles the file transfer process differently).

Certain things do need you to eject the device (though they are quite rare)

One way to help the device complete any file transfer so you can remove it without stopping it is go into explorer and right click on the device go to properties > hardware > select the device (if it's there) properties > policies and select optimize for quick removal.

Of course you have to do this with each device ;)

Though it only really applies when you are transferring files, if you've completed a file transfer you should be able to simply unplug it, it's a kind of insurance thing.

BTW if you corrupt your data, I'm not responsible (my disclaimer) :p

I used to always simply yank the device once I was sure that file transfer was complete but then somebody told me that I should always stop the device or the data on it could get corrupted.

Never had a problem so I guess it's probably safe to just pull it.

Thanks for your reply.
