I have spent the last couple of months making a new order system for my work. My boss asked me how much money I want for it. but have no idea what is a fair price. Database is quite complicated in the end, using advanced features

I know it is a bit of a vague question, but is there a figure per hour i can charge for example

What would an external company have charged them for doing something similar

Any advice would be appreciated!

First, evaluate the number of hours you worked on it. No matter what salary per hour you want, you'll need this.

Since you already work there, you could go for your salary. Your boss will probably not complain and will easily understand if you say "I worked 100 hours on it, pay me 100 hours for it".

In canadian dollars, a good consultant could make between 20$ and 40$ an hour.

You should probably find out what developers charge in your area. A good developer in my area would charge at least twice what FLabrecque quoted per hour as an outside contractor.

No, was all done in my spare time. Well, bar the odd 5 mins here and there talking to colleagues, but no development

Get paid for "scope creap"

No matter how carefully you write your application, the client will want changes as he uses it, and will require support if problems develop. With an employer it may be difficult, but I always sell an application with an "add-on" to get paid a set fee or per/hour consultion.

Think that will be more difficult as any problems will need to be fixed as the system is central to the company. Will prob write my invoice out as free repairs (i.e. things that are not working correctly once system goes live) but not any further development

On a further note, the book suggested, anyone know of any retailer which would sell it in UK. All sites i have looked at involve shipping the book over from America (which is a cost I want to try and avoid)
