Problem with database. Rejected Records?

I need help practising how to find Rejected records on database for my exam and I've searched everywhere. I read that I should use the Append query and but I don't know how to. If anybody does can they please please PLEASE give me a step to step guide of how to do it. Please educate me!
Rejected records are the invalid data in your database. For example it can be a record that doesn't meet the validation rules. E.g FREO156 was 'rejected' because it has a letter O instead of a number. I just need help on how to do the Append query.

At risk of looking ignorant, I think if the records are rejected then they won't have been written to the database, so you won't be able to retrieve them?
