I don't know if I am breaking any rules posting here but I don't know where to go to get advice.

My problem is that everytime I open Access 2003 and try to create a new data file Access is asking for a password. It doesn't matter if I am trying to open existing data files that don't have passwords it is still asking for a password. So basically I can't get into Access. Does anyone have any suggestions or where I should look for help

Where did you acquire this copy of Access?
At what point in the Access start up is it asking for a password?

It sounds like you have linked to a workgroup.

use tools, security, woprkgroup administrator, and re-join system.ndw - which should be in your c:\windows\system32 folder.

you should NEVER modify this file in any way, or you can lock yourself out of your databases. the workgroup file is the security file that prevents unauthorised use of a database. If you want to implement user security, you should create a new security file, and use that.

you have to be careful to understand exactly what you are doing - as otherwise you can lock yourself out of any or all of your databases, with no prospect of recovery. Note that just creating a new workgroup file with the same name is no help

If you have amended your copy of system.mdw, you could try renaming it. I think Access ceates a new copy if it can't find one. You could also copy it from a friend's computer.

Its part of a standard Microsoft Office packwhich I have had for several years. After opening Access you have the option to open a blank database or select an existing database, once I click on one of these this is when it asks for the password. After searching Access with a password retriever it says I don't have permission to access the object and requires additional permissions. This is my own personal database which I have put many hours into building and am very frustrated at not being able to access it.

This is a strange thing. Yesterday, I tried to open an unsecured A97 database in A2003, and I couldn't - as A2003 said I didn't have permission.

I was able to open it in A97.

I was able to create a blank database, and import everything into A2003, so it's sorted now.

So try that. Create a new database, and try and import all the objects. See if that works. I would also take a windows copy of the original before trying anything, just in case.

Can you open the datbase directly, without going through your dbs manager?

Ok i have re joined system.ndw as you suggested but now I get the message as per the attachment. What do I need to do now.

I can't even get access to open when I select new database as you suggested as it asks for the password

Ok I have got a bit further I can now insert password in popup box that says Enter database Password it then comes up with the following message (See attachment)

is this on a network?

it sounds more like you don't have privileges for the network folder, than an access error message.

No it's not on a network it is just a stand alone database that I bult on my laptop

is there any way you can zip it up, and upload it to the forum.

or even pm me, and I will give you my email address.

It won't even let me zip it up it still shows 6.88mb when zipped same as unzipped
