Open the query in design mode, select query on the toolbar, scroll down to parameters, click on, in the box that opens put [EnterStartDate] tab across define field as Date/Time do the same for the end date, enter the same definition as your criteria

Rich thank you for all your help. I know ive asked some stupid questions

One last thing though in a report I want the [Enter start date] and [enter end date] dates to be displayed so a report shows what dates teh user entered any ideas?

I suspect most here would prefer to pass parameters to the query via a form, you'll have to change the parameters to reference the form but you can then just set an unbound textbox on the reports control source to the form, this method also allows you to verify dates before passing them to the query, post back if you need more help on this method
