I have seen advertised a number of programs whose developers claim the program will document an application for you.

They're relatively expensive - several hundred $ as I recall. But if they work, it could save many days of headaches.

I was wondering if anyone had used them, if you'd recommend them etc.

I would use the Access bult-in Documenter. It's not pretty, but it documents the database... :)

I always supply support documentation with the app because I have always used support docs (flowchart, specs, features, etc) as part of the initiation and development, not winddown and delivery.

As you may (or may not) have gathered from my other posts - this is a one-shot deal. I am not a programmer or developer. I have produced the database as a solution to an existing problem - namely the dbase IV version of the program would not work over our network. And, since dbase IV is so old, there was no internal support for the program. Any design has been ad hoc. Yes a lousy programming practice, but this is very much a work in progress. So no - design supplement, flow charts etc. YES I KNOW IT IS LOUSY PROGRAMMING PRACTICE.

My thinking is I am due to retire in 18 months, and there is no one trained to replace me yet. (For members unfamiliar with Canadian government practices, inheritance management is something of a novelty). (This next comment may be obvious.) The documentation should be independent of the program so that people coming after me can figure out what I've done.

I have used the documenter - as you say, not pretty but it works.

My question was intended to be more general (I wasn't actually looking for a solution) - has anyone used these products, and is it worth investing a couple hundred dollars?
