Promted for Parameter Value

I am promted for a parameter value when I click on the + sign to view the sub datasheet. I recently changed the primary key from a poorly thought out combination of characters to the person's full name. The table is linked to grievance records. If I enter the primary key when promted for the parameter value, I am able to view the records. If I enter nothing and press enter, I am unable to view the records. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Yountville!

I am not sure what your question is so could you try again? Also, an Autonumber makes a much better Primary key than does a name. It is possible to have two JaneSmith's... And I would use forms to display data rather than using a table and clicking on the + get the subdata sheet.

Having said all that if you will say exactly what it is that you want to do I am sure that someone will have the answer for you.

Thanks for your reply Jack. And so close too. I work up at the Veterans Home here in Yountville. I assist resident's in resolving grievances with the Home. I created this database a few years ago with little knowledge and less forethought. I was forced to improve upon it a few months ago in order to link it to Pendragon Forms on my Palm. In doing so, I changed the primary key to the person's name so that the name, not the autonumber, would be displayed on the palm.

The database consists of several tables ranging from Departments, staff info, ombudsman codes, resident table, and a grievance table. The grievance table is linked to Pendragon Forms on my palm as well as a query linked to a form within the database to track unresolved grievances. I use the datasheet view on the resident table to enter new grievances at my pc because I've found it more time efficient to move from one record to the next.

My problem, or at least the problem I'm currently working on, is that when i changed the primary key to the resident's name and deleted the manufactured primary key, I screwed up the link to the records in the grievance table. Now when I click on the + sign in datasheet view in the resident table to view all of the grievance records for that resident, I am promted for a parameter value. If I copy and paste the PK value for that resident record, the grievance records associated with that resident record are viewable in the subdata sheet. If I don't put in a value when promted for the parameter value and press enter, the subdata sheet appears empty.

What changes do I need to make in order avoid the promt for the parameter value?

Tom -

I know the facility... If I wasn't happy in my own home I would see about getting in there and letting Uncle Sam take care of me, but I am still to frisky for "The Home"!

You can create an Update Query to put the PK that is in the Primary table into you Foreign table. Hopefully you have another field in the foreign table that will let you determine which ID goes with which record. This could be a bit wild but hopefully you will be able to do it.

If you run into a problem just let me know...

Jack

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try and let you know how it comes out. Let me know if you're ever in the area and would like a tour of the facility. Great place. Thanks again.

Tom -

I have heard lots of good things about the place but I am usually so anxious to get to a winery that I don't feel that I have time to stop and mingle. Maybe I will do it one of these days so thank you for your kind offer!

Usually when you get prompted for a parameter, something is not spelled correctly or something has been deleted since the original relationship was defined. So Access is asking you for the name of the thing 'cause it ain't there no more.

That's why you got the question. You yourself said you had altered the table after it was created. I think that's your culprit right there.

I'll make no judgement as to whether you did or didn't normalize your tables and their relationships. I'll just say that if you didn't, you are asking for trouble with that many tables related to each other in some way.

Hi
did anybody notice that this thread was dated 2002 until todays post, I think Jack Cowley is long retired.

I've found this to be a problem in another site that uses this same BB system. New users come on and they start looking for questions they can answer without paying attention to the dates so they revive old threads.

I find it interesting that if you look at all of JerichoSteele's posts they all say the exact same thing give or take a phrase i.e. Found this link in another thread.

He is but he's still active on Utter Access. :D

That's where I first came across Jack, but I rarely visit that site since they changed the font and I have great difficulty reading it, I'm glad he's still alive and well and no doubt enjoying his wine.
