but you say by switching to toggle button it works? I'm no expert in ribbon xml, so I don't understand how it works. I guess I had the wrong info re which column is the idMSO.

I had no idea either. When I use button to add totals to the ribbon, I receive this error:

As you see, its says the actual control type is toggleButton.
As a test I changed Button to ToggleButton in xml and it worked.
Your image in 36 post above says control type is ToggleButton too.
Above XML in #16 above shows the button in ribbon and I can use it in query design mode without any error.

Once again thanks for your help.

Sure it works. When using idMso, OnAction is ignored even if it exists in the xml.
I could have deleted that. But since it doesn't harm and I use a template, a table and VBA to build the xml, I left it be there.
I meant does onAction work, which I didn't think it does, and you just confirmed it. Glad to know it doesn't break the xml when you leave it in though. Thanks!
