I generally do this by storing a number to represent the value. The Format property of the control or field allows text to be substituted and the colour defined for positive, negative, zero and Null values.
For example the following Format will show a green Yes for positive numbers, a red No for negatives and a blue Maybe for zero:
"Yes"[green];"No"[Red];"Maybe"[blue]
It is very efficient and works with Continuous Forms.
