Running numbers in continuous form

How do I make running numbers in a continuous form and independent from record ID, each time starting from 1, 2, 3 and so on?

the trouble is access has no concept of an independent numbering order - everything is just a set of data - eg if you do generate numbers, and then click a-z in one column, or filter the form, what do you want to happen to the numbers?
