Running numbers

I have an interesting problem and I can't seem to find a solution.

I am doing up a stats package for a sport league. In the Top Scorers report, they would like a situation where the players are numbered according to their goals and assists.

I have inserted a field set to =1 and set it to running sum, HOWEVER
What do I do if two players are tied with the same number of points?

Example: Players 4 and 5 are tied with the same number of points. They should both have the number 4 beside their name and the next player should not be #5, he should be #6.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Why not just group by score and set the running sum on the group?
