Save Record Question

This is probably a stupid question.
But I've been reading the threads on saving records.
I always thought that once you have entered data into a field or moved to a new record that its added to the table.
Why would there be a need to save a record?
Am I way off on this?
Or is this for some other procedure?

Until you close the form or navigate to a new or different record it is not saved. This procedure is to force a save on the current record should you need to do something without closing or navigating.
