read only access to my database via security wizard

Good morning all,
I have a question regarding the security features that Access has to offer, I have a very simple database that is made up of about 20 tables, I would very much like to set up some security features that allow me entry to the database as full administrator and another two users as read only access. I have managed to get the security wizard to set up the required accounts that are password protected in order to enter the database, however, I have said that one of my test accounts should be read only and not have any access to certain tables within my database,, this is not the case once I have signed in,, on the account where I have set read only to all tables I can still access the tables and add entries??
I am probably missing something very obvious, thank you very much for your help
regards

You require workgroup security. Search the forum for this topic as it it not easitly explained in a simple paragraph.

you're not :)

i take it you're in 2003?

you need to create a workgroup, create the users including a new one for the admin, then switch off the permissions for the default user 'Admin' and the default group 'Users'

back it up in case you manage to lock yourself out :)

that is great, thank you all very much for your kind help, yes I’m working in 2003,, I’m getting the feeling from a few people now that these security issues can be alittle more hassle than they are worth,, still i shall persevere,, once again
Many thanks

You can learn just about everything in Access through trial and error EXCEPT SECURITY.
Do not enter these deep waters and uncharted territories without a detailed step by step guide.
I have been doing Access Security for 10 years and I still have my guide with me when I do it.

May I recommend:

download the first file – Security Paper by Jack Macdonald. It’s a little long but it tells you everything you need to know.

what can i say,, appart from a huge THANK YOU,, i now have some bedtime reading,, i have tried to bullishly fumble my way through the security wizard with Usergroups and users with various priviages but other than password protecting my database all users have the same access right,,, very much a head scratcher!!
once again,, thank you very much

Just to make sure it's good and confusing, Access 2007 dumps Workgroup Security altogether (no MDW file support at all).

Really, though, don't make a mountain out of a molehill. We're talking about Allow/Deny privileges in Access here, which are easy to set up and maintain. (Ten years doing this and you still carry around a manual? Really?) Also, keep in mind that the Workgroup security is pretty easy to break. Your typical user won't know how (and probably won't care), but anyone that wants to bypass it can do so with a little bit of searching on Google.
