Hope the webinars explain why 80% of drivers consider they are above average. :)

A statistic of interest I read on the website was that 20% of accidents are caused by the older drivers!

I suspect that a more realistic statistic would be 80% of older drivers see accidents all around them without realising they are the cause.

Minty, spot-on. This is how I feel about the whole, women-vs. men statistics. The insurance companies tout the numbers that women get in fewer accidents than men. But we all know it's definitely not because women are actually better drivers. In fact they constantly seem very confused about the rules! Everyone else around them is gracious in 'helping' the situation and everybody tries to avoid hitting them.

Approach any 2-way or 4-way stop with stop signs and you'll quickly discover women have their own personal 'rules' and aren't usually aware of the actual ones. Like old people, they drive a little slower than men, but their low accident rate isn't because of actual good & proper driving, it's because everybody else is looking out for them.

Funny example, we have a 2-way stop at the edge of our neighborhood where 2 opposing lanes each try to turn onto a bigger street to get out of the neighborhood. Literally almost EVERY time I approach that stop sign, another person - usually a woman in a large SUV - has already stopped first. I sit there and wait for her to go first, the rule doesn't seem very complicated. If it is a man, they do exactly as prescribed, almost 100% of the time. If it's a woman, they'll give me their 'special' hand signals, waving me along as if that's the way it works. Sometimes I just sit there and refuse to move until they go, hoping it sparks a dinner conversation that ends with them learning something. Annoying as heck.

Reminds me of the old George Carlin bit: "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"
