I have a desktop machine running Windows XP Professional, and a Freecom external usb hardrive attached to it.

When i create a shared file on the internal drive of the XP machine I can access it with no problems from my HP Vista laptop via a wireless network. However if a create a shared folder on the external drive, I cannot access it from the laptop. I get a message about permissions, with a comment about "insufficient server space to excecute command" included.

I have tried creating the shared folder on a usb stick, can access it ok from laptop, have also tried creating a shared folder on a second external drive, this I cannot access. The problem seems related to the fact the drives are external usb.

The fact I can access the shared folder on the internal drive and the usb stick from the Vista laptop leads me to believe there are no issues between the XP machine and the Vista machine. All folder shares have full access permissions, the XP machine has my laptop account name, and this is associated with the remote desktop group. I have full administrator privillages on both machines. I have had a similar set-up in the past using external drives with no problems, except all machines were XP.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanx in advance

Possibly yet another 'security' feature :p

Try these first:

For Vista Home

1) Run the registry editor and open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

2) If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel

3. Set the value to 1

4. Reboot

For Vista Ultimate

1) Click on Start and on the command/search field, enter secpol.msc. This will open the Local Security Policy app. Now on the left menu go to Local Policies > Security Options.

2) On the right pane, scroll down to Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level and double click it.

3) On the Local Security Setting tab you should see a drop down menu with options. Choose “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.” Accept all dialogs and restart.

Thanks clicky, didn't work I'm afraid, any other solutions?

Thanks in advance

You don't need to click on the link (it does work for me btw) but it's actually the wrong link - The info I've put in the reply was from the link. Have you tried that suggestion ?

Thanks Minkey, sorry got your user name and the link name mixed up! What i should have said was:

I tried the solution you outlined for Vista Home, but it did not help.

Just to see I tried doing the share on the external drive from the Vista Laptop, I could access this from from the XP machine.

Thanks
