hi everyone,

i want to know how to make it such that people have to press the SHIFT key before they can see the database object listing?

i don't want to bypass the shift key or make any more secure than that - i just want the very most basic level of security, and really, it's more for the prettyness of not having the list of tables/queries/etc listed in the background (or on the side, as in AC2007)... but it will be used by various people in the department, and it would be good to prevent them from playing with the tables and such... i think i can trust them not to fiddle if i disable the object listing...

In Access 2007:
Access Options > Current Database > Navigation
Uncheck Display Navigation Pane.

However F11 will open it again.
To prevent this turn off Use Special Access Keys.
Access Options > Current Database > Application Options

You might want to turn off Allow Full Menus too.

Note that a Right Click on the object when when its open will provide Design View as an option.
To stop this uncheck Allow Default Shortcut Menus.
Unfortunately this also kills the right click menus including the ClipBoard and filters.

For more extremely limited and minor security, you might want to consider hiding all of your tables, queries, forms and reports. That way even if they "accidentally" open up the view pane, they wont see anything. Now if someone is intent on seeing and manipulating your DB this will do absolutely nothing to stop them.

thanks guys :) so easy when you know how! LOL

if someone is intent on manipulating the DB, then Ken Higgs version control FE updater will fix that LOL!! ;P
