slow performance with most Access design tasks

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 that is about a year and a half old with plenty of speed and space.

I recently installed the 2003 microsoft office suite. I'm working on an Access database now, but almost anytime I change or navigate database (update tables with new fields, alter queries, enter data manually, save tables and forms, change views, VIRTUALLY ANYTHING!) the program freezes up and becomes unresponsive for several seconds before performing the task. It's like Access has to "think" excessively in order to figure out what I'm telling it to do. The program has never crashed, but it makes for very slow going as the delays are so frequent. Database size is not an issue because I'm dealing with a new, virtually empty database.

I have noticed a similar problem with Excel spreadsheets since I installed the programs, but it is not severe as for access. Something clearly is not right. Any ideas?

For a start, go to Tool > Options > General (Tab) > Name AutoCorrect ...and turn off "Track name AutoCorrect Info".. has that helped?

You're not kidding!

I recently got Office 2003 via my employer's MS Home Use Program (slight brag here...cost me ~$22), and it occasionally does not like to save changes. It coughs and chokes and finally gets the business done, but I fear I am about to lose everything each time. I have, as always, turned off the name auto-correct.
My laptop still has xp on it, and works like a champ.

I disabled name tracking and autocorrecting, but am still having problems. For every 10 simple design tasks I perform (including just toggling views) 4 or 5 cause the program to freeze up for about 5-10 seconds. When access freezes it always performs the task, just with the frequent delays. Something is not right, and this is driving me mad. Any other ideas?

Do you have Norton Anti-Virus installed? I have noticed on my home PC that MS Office files are always scanned when I first open them up. You could tell your virus scanner to ignore specific Office file extensions.

Wow! I have Macafee. There was zero indication that virus software was the culprit, but that did the trick. Thanks.
