Spammer Update

Just a quick FYI for anyone who is interested.

I have been working hard to try to catch spammers BEFORE they can spam our site. As I have previously mentioned, I keep a database (Access of course) that will let me quickly lookup to see if someone has spammed the site before, or has been banned before.

If I see some suspicious entry or person registering, I will check to see if their information is in my database. If not, I still check on Google to see if they have spammed other sites and, if they have, I ban them immediately.

And, I report weekly to SJ McAbney (our forum Admin) to get him to ban the IP's of those who have been spamming. My current threshhold is if they have been banned 3 times or more I report the IP to SJ and have him ban it.

For those who have been around a while, you should have noticed a decrease in the spam activity on the site.

Right now, in the database I have 1248 banned users listed. I just was working through our member list and managed to find several usernames that needed to be banned due to either being banned previously for spamming here or for spamming activity on other sites.

Not all of the decrease in spam is due to my efforts though. A while back there had been some updates to the forum which helped as well.

So, anyway, I just wanted to let you know (and any spammers who read this) that I am on their trail and continue to work at beating them.
