System vs File Date (1 Viewer)

I am working on a form that is bound to a table with a date field named Date. When I try to obtain the system date in the form open procedure the value that is assigned to my variable is the field date and not the system date. I have tried renaming the field on the table but that has not helped. I am using the date function to obtain the system date.
DateVariable = Date
