Trimming characters from numbers

How can I remove the pound and the millions from £2.5m to leave me with 2.5

Can't see how its done with, what I know of left, right, mid they woudln't acheive it as they are not always in the same position for example the £2.5m could be £2m or £10.5m.

I wrote a function a while back to strip out unwanted characters from a string - it's here:

So usage in your case would be AllowOnly([yourfieldname],"1234567890.")

If you want it as a number, then Val(AllowOnly([yourfieldname],"1234567890."))

For the record, you could have used the Mid() function along with the Len function to find the overall length (Len(..) - 2 I think it would be)

Will Val() work with a leading non-numeric character? In a brief test, it did not:

?val("$123m")
