When trying to set a password I receive the following message.

You must have the database open for exclusive use to set or remove the database password.

To open the database exclusively, close the database, and then reopen it by clicking the File tab and using the Open command, In the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to the Open button and then select Open Exclusive.

When I follow the instructions, I don't get a dialog box. How do I set a password?

The instructions take care of a precondition and nothing else. Where you set the password depends on which verison you have. Have a look-see on the various pages/options. Check the File -page if you have one.

I am using Access 2013. I am not sure what you mean by "the File -page"

the file page is the tab at the top, file, home, etc.

anyway, when you open a database it can be in sharing (multi-user) or exclusive (ie single user) mode

what it is saying is that you need to open the database in exclusive mode in order to be able to set a password.

How do I open it in the exclusive mode? I don't get the dialog box asking me to choose "Open Exclusive". I am the only user on this file.

which version of access

if you open access, then navigate to the database you want to use - at that point, you should be able to select "open exclusive"

the exact mechanism will be slightly different with each access version

I am using Access 2013. I don't see any option to "open exclusive".
