I've got a problem, many thanks to anyone who can help.

Our department uses an Access database we created to log information on customers. The database is large, so the main database is stored on the network, while each user has a database on their desktop with linked tables. All queries, forms, etc. exist on the desktop versions; only tables exist on the network database.

When more than 10 users open their desktop databases and run queries, a user eventually get an Unrecognized Database Format error, stating the path of the network database. Performing a compact and repair on the network database solves the problem, but only temporarily. Everyone has to exist their desktop versions for 5 minutes at a time, at least 5 times a day to compact and repair. We've tried putting the network database on a bigger and better server, to no avail. Every user has Access 2000, and I can't figure out how to solve this problem. Anyone who can help me, you could save our department a lot of time and trouble. Thank you!

The MS knowledge base does not seem to be working right now, but I remember a couple things I read out there that may pertain to your situation. First there was setting OpLocks to off on the server, either Windows or Novel, when you had a heavly used shared MSAccess DB on it. The other was something about record locking did not work properly if you started the DB from a shortcut ICON or something along those lines. You may want to search the MS site when it starts working again. But I may totally wrong also.......

Hi
I think problem is that some of your user have 2 versions of MS Access database(Access97 and 2000) at the same time on the same computer.
No need to compact or repair databes(this action just help to convert 97 to 2000)-that is why after all user can use converted database.
All you have to do is to set up proper path to db from desktop shortcut for those who have 2 version on machine which include path to msaccess.exe and db itself.
In the property of desktop shortcut type something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\msaccess.exe C:\YourPathToDB\YourDB.mdb"

Make sure you know path to MS Access2000 executable.

Igor.

Well, all users have only Access 2000 on their desktops; however, the server on which the main database is located does contain both 2000 and 97 databases...would this cause a problem?
