I am currently using a SQL Server 2000 backend for my access application. The database has been on a shared hosting server for several years. I have been having problems with the host recently and have decided to move to a new host. I have 3 options, stay with 2000, move to 2005 or move to 2008.

The front end was built in Access 2000. The users are all running Access 2003. We have had no performance issues with the current SQL Server db, other than when the host's server goes down. I have worked out all of the kinks, and the application works flawlessly.

If I stay with 2000, I should have nothing to do other than pointing my connection to the new server. However, I expect that at some point in time 2000 will be discontinued and I will be forced to move to 2005 or 2008 anyway. What issues, if any, might I expect if I upgrade to 2005 or to 2008? Am I less likely to have problems with one over the other? Does one or the other have any advantage when being used by an Access front end?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Sup

Your ODBC driver likely needs to change but that's about it. I would go for 2008 if possible so it will be a lot longer until you need to move to something else again.

2008 for sure. The improvements to the management and dev tools alone are worth it over 2005. No point upgrading to an old version.

PS. Just to add another option to your list, 2008 R2 is out soon. But unless you need any of its BI enhancements I wouldn't bother waiting for it.
