user security creating groups

I am learning about enabling user level security using the wizard in access 2003. anyway after 2 days i've finally figured out how it works and yes i have read the recommended documentation. one problem (among many) i've found is that i cannot create groups because when i assign users to the groups i've created i can not get into my database using the users name. if however i assign a user to a predefined access group which access creates itself then i have no problem gaining access. to this end i created a group and gave this group all the permissions that were present on a predefined group - the read only group. and still i cannot get into my database using a users name whom i have explicitaly granted permission for and assigned to the group i created. does anyone have any ideas why this is?

ULS is deprecated as of A2007. It is complicated, doesn't work very well and often causes more problems than it solves. Don't waste time persuing it.

what would you recommend? setting user permisssions via folders and files? the reason why i'm looking in to this in the first place is that the file permissions i set via windows keep disappearing after about 1 week. i know it's an IT problem but they do not know what's causing it so i'm stumped. i need a secure database that people can get into when i'm not here?

Real security is best achieved by putting the tables onto SQL Server. The Express version is free from the Microsoft site and will hold databases up to 4GB.

You can take advantages of the advanced features of SQL Server if you want but you can get started by simply relinking the tables via a DSN.

Security can be set on tables and fields for groups or users based on their Windows login. This will thoroughly protect the backend.

The frontend can be protected by releasing mde or accde versions which cannot be edited. Just keep your developer version in a safe place.

Access security and Windows file permissions have NOTHING to do with one another.
