Does anyone know why this site shut down?

Nor do many of the old hands either. :-(

The shutdown of UA was nothing to do with any other forum such as AWF or Discord.

I have no information about what's happened to utter access...

I do have vague recollections about things that happened to utter access, whether based on fact or rumour I cannot say ..

A few years ago I would say a couple but it might have been longer, the utter access website became damaged corrupted something like that possibly a hack, as indeed access world forums have experienced from time to time....

I recall at the time there was some discussion about whether to fix utter access because there didn't appear to be anyone in charge or responsible for it...

It was the second forum I was a member of, the first was Woody's lounge, but I think Woody's lounge shut down for some reason and I wanted a new home.... I seem to recall Woody's lounge had a crocodile logo!

I joined utter access, and I found that it was not very supportive of beginners ... This is my experience of it from possibly 25 years ago!

I also recall I wanted to post a blog on the site but the formatting of the text had to meet draconian requirements! ... Well it's hard enough writing a blog without having to impose someone's idea of how it should be formatted... I never understood why? I've never seen those sort of conditions applied elsewhere, most people are glad of the content....

Having a complete guess here, maybe they wanted the content formatted correctly so that it could be easily uploaded to Microsoft's website!

Anyway what I perceived as dismissive unhelpful responses to my questions and the fact I couldn't post Blogs there had me look for somewhere else... That's when I found Jon's Access World Forums. ... Here I remain to this day ....

Jon created something unique not found in other models.

Yes indeed he has...
I recall Jon mentioning that he had a poor experience on a website where he was treated badly. It also explains his relaxed attitude with posters --- before I became a moderator I was of the opinion that difficult people should be banned, based on the idea that the constant stirrers, I'm sure you can think of some on here!
The constant stirrers create a lot of work for the moderators so even though they've got free speech, moderators don't have the time to babysit and sort out the mess they cause. The easiest option is a ban, but Jon is against that, and I reluctantly followed his wishes.. I refrained from banning certain people, even though every fibre of my being demanded it!!
I've come to realise over the years that Jon's right.... there are some notable people who were once entrenched and diabolical trolls who are now actually semi-human and they exist on this site!!! --- they can't help having a little stir now and again but --- I look on it with amusement!!!

Yes, in my opinion what he's created is a family atmosphere. He's allowed experts as well as novice to have an equal voice. And somehow been able to control moderator burnout. He has done much more than this obviously, but this is what I have noticed.
