Essentially, in addition to being a complete technophobe, my wife can get lost coming home from work:eek:. After seing a TV spot for a navigation system, she actually made a statment along the lines of "I would benefit greatly from one of those". I started looking at Garmin and Tom Tom, and then noticed how many are out there now. Looking for something easy to use, and portable as opposed to in-dash. Anyone have any suggestions?

Over here Car navigation is a hot thing. Everyone wants a Tom tom, being designed in NL. The only Tomtom ready for the US is the GO 910 ( approx. € 500), the cheaper ones mainly have Europe on sd card.
I travel a lot in Euriope and still do without a Car nav.
If I schedule a trip ( even in remote places like Romania) I use Map 24 of Google maps. Cheap and reliable. Never had any problems to get at the right place.

But women can't read a map rak:eek: :D

Looking at this myself. My lad has reserarched this quite deeply and his recommendation for UK is Tom Tom One

Seems quite good to me as well.

Simple straightforward unit that you can get as technical with as you like in terms of customising if you wish

I had a Tom Tom 700 with the hands free option. very simple to use. my girl friend seemed to like it too.

We have a Tom Tom Go 500 (Australian maps), it works well in built up urban areas, but in country areas it's route choice can be quite strange. On a number of occasions it has directed us down 4WD tracks. Only for us to find that we could have arrived a little quicker, albeit in on less exciting route once we arrived at our destination

I think for the US Bodi, the way to go would be the Garmin, though the bastaches complain about not having any programmers and when one applys repeatedly they blow ya off, but any way. My cousins husband works for Garmin and I have gotten to play with some of the toys he tests for them. I like the products

You just have to train them that north is up, not necessarily the direction you are currently traveling.:p

This week I travelled thru Hungary and Romania, no Tomtom's whatsoever, just a print of the googlemap and map24. Unfortunately, the collaegue I travelled with was a man, so we ended up at the place we scheduled to go ! :)
