Version2000 -97

Hello Switch here Hope everyone had a nice xmas and I wish you all the very best for the year 2004.

Ok I do have a bit of a silly problem. I have tried to find the answer in a number of ways before posting this question and I can't find the answer that I want. Well I'm not even sure if it is possible to do what I want to do.

I downloaded the working database evaluation trial form Access-programmers, and I downloaded it in Version 97 because that was the only version they offered. I have MS Office XP and can convert databases to 2002,2000, and 97 as you all well know.

I have my Access on ver2000 so it won't let me open the downloaded database. Is there a way I can open the file in this version of access without converting it or having to open it in 2000 or 2002??
It is a customisable database so if I open it in 2000 or 2002 I won't be able to change the design of the database ya get me?
So is there a way of doing this??

I'd be most grateful for any ones input on this matter

You'll have to convert the 97 database to edit it. Once changes are made then you convert it back.

I have MS Office XP and can convert databases to 2002,2000, and 97 as you all well know.

Actually, I didn't know you had MS Office XP.

I actually tried this and my cat Links, (my helping icon) tells me he can't open and MDE file.??

What does that mean??

I didn't mean that you all knew that i had MS office xp. I meant that you all know that you can convert to 2000 and 2002 versions.

So if I convert the 97 database to 2000 I can change what I need to change and then convert it back to version 97??

What does that mean?

An MDE file is a compiled Access database. It's read only.
If this is what you are trying to edit then you can't. You need to edit the .mdb (normal Access file extension) to make changes to a database.

Thanx for the answers. At the moment I am just wanting to open the file and I can't even do that???

Should I be able to open it to look at it if I convert the 97 database file to 2000??

See I got the impression that I could somehow open my whole Access program up in another version??
Forgive me but I don't know where on earth I got that idea from. Maybe it wasn't Earth.??

Anyway thats what I thought I could do?
So I will try to convert it to 2000 and I should be able to just open it.

See I want to get ideas on database design. I know i have the NWIND database but I actually think its not very good at explanations on how you do things and I can't seem to work things out from that database.

It is my understanding that for you to use an .MDE file, then
you have to have that version of Access. Access can't open
and convert the .MDE file. It could with an .MDB though.
