hi,

every time i look in or shared area i see a new backup file of one of my mde's...

junior school pastoral log_backup

it seems every time i delete one a new on is there next time...

what's causing this? is a user not logging out of the software properly or what?

cheers

greg

What you think is a backup database is probably the "record locking" database by which Access maintains record locking.

It has an extensdion of "lde" and is deleted within a few seconds of an Access datbase being normally closed. If the datbase is closed abnormally, the "locking datbase" will not be deleted.

It is only necessary to delete the "led" is if you moving or distributing the database.

Each time a database is opened, a record locking database is created or the one left over from an abnormal termination is used.

What makes you think it's a backup?

only because it has backup in the filename:

ie

Junior School Pastoral Log

becomes:

Junior School Pastoral Log_Backup

if a user was crashing out it would aslo leave the locking file behind so am confused as to what's causing this..

any ideas?

i think if the database reports a send to microsoft error, and then tries to restart, it takes a backup copy of itself, before doing the repair.

your users shouldn't be sharing the same database in a network - is that what they are doing?

yeah, our IT dept refuses to add the db locally via a logon script due to it's size so they have to access it on the network...

so what is happening to cause it to leave a backup file every time?

as i say, i think someone must be getting a "access must close error", where it tries to send the error to ms - in the middle is a "try to repair button", and what it does is take a backup copy first - ask your users if they get errors of that sort.
